Record Preservation Workshop

Sponsored by the Princess Anne County / Virginia Beach Historical Society at
Virginia Wesleyan College, October 27, 2002

As part of the launching of the "Community Roots" project and in order to help encourage local groups, individuals and organizations to collect and preserve their historical materials, the Society held a program on preserving records.

Part I featured Princess Anne County / Virginia Beach historian and Dean of Virginia Wesleyan College, Dr. Stephen S. Mansfield who spoke about the reasons for preserving records, how to collect materials, what kind of materials are important to keep, and the best way to store these items.  Dr. Mansfield of Virginia Wesleyan College also displayed materials, articles, scrapbooks and other items currently stored in the Virginia Wesleyan Archives.  Virginia Wesleyan houses many records and items of the History of Princess Anne County and Virginia Beach.  Additionally, the Virginia Beach Public Library houses historical materials of Virginia Beach and Princess Anne County. An outline of his presentation is available.

Part II delved into preserving records with electronic media and featured Society member June Cooper, owner of Asgard Productions and former instructor/director of the Recording Studio and Electronic Music program at Old Dominion University.  The presentation dealt with various types of electronic media and how to keep the media files accessible as new and more advanced technologies are developed and become popular.  There were also some comments on what one can do with technology to help preserve historical information.  An outline of her presentation is also available.  Plus an outline of  "Things you can do with technology."
