Preservation Partnership Becomes a Reality

The Princess Anne County/Virginia Beach Historical Society has been working with city officials and local realtors towards the goal of establishing a Preservation Partnership. On Tuesday, November 23, 1999, Virginia Beach City Council approved two new ordinances to make the Partnership a reality. The ordinances will create a local register to identify historic properties within the city and provide real estate tax exemptions for their restoration.

The Preservation Partnership will have the responsibility to purchase historic properties, protect their historical integrity through deed restrictions, and then market the properties to potential buyers. As one of the Preservation partners, the Society will play a major role in approving acquisition of historic properties. The Tidewater Association of Realtors, as the second partner, will negotiate the sale of these properties. The City of Virginia Beach, the third partner, will maintain the resister through the Historic Review Board and interpret applicable City codes.

Property owners interested in listing their properties on the register can call the Historic Preservation Office at (757) 431-4000 for an application. Inclusion on the register is voluntary; but only properties submitting applications will be considered for inclusion.

As several Society members and City officials looked on, C. Mac Rawls, Director of Museums and Cultural Arts, and Historical Society President Glenda Knowles stood before City Council to acknowledge the creation of the Preservation Partnership and to thank Council members for their vision for historical preservation.

The Preservation Partnership will hopefully have a far-reaching effect on preserving the City’s remaining historic properties. It will certainly have an impact on the Historical Society’s role in public policy. What an opportunity for us as members to support and have a voice in the preservation of our history.
