Kempsville
Here in November of 1775, in the then village of Kemp's Landing, John Ackiss was killed by Royal Governor Lord Dunmore’s militia and became the first Virginian casualty of the American Revolution. The incident was later called the "Skirmish of Kempsville" and a plaque was erected near the site by the Daughters of the American Revolution. The town of Kempsville, established in 1781, was the location of the county seat from 1778-1823.
