The 40th Anniversary Banquet
for the Princess Anne County / Virginia Beach Historical Society
The Society’s 40th Anniversary was celebrated this on October 17, 2001 with a banquet dinner held at Boyd Hall on the Virginia Wesleyan Campus. Following a reception which included a display of antique books and memorabilia of Virginia Beach and Princess Anne County, members, as well as several past presidents of the Society, current members of city council Barbara Henley and Reba McClanan, and Virginia Beach Mayor Meyera Oberndorf enjoyed a memorable dinner.

During the after-dinner program, brief remarks and reminiscences were made by one of the Society’s founders, Katherine Byrd Miller, and former Society president, J. Davis Reed III. Local historian and Dean at Virginia Wesleyan College, Stephen Mansfield then coordinated a video and slide program highlighting some Society memories. The video presentations included excerpts from “Making of the City”, the story of the Princess Anne County – Virginia Beach merger; “Home to Wolfsnare”, a video of Thomas Walke’s participation in the Congressional Congress – produced by the Society, and a video interview with Louisa Venable Kyle, author of the Witch of Pungo also one of the Society’s founders. The slide presentation included the original photos of locations and old houses taken by Katherine Miller and the original founders of the Society.
